It is slow going, always has been, and will be post-launch too I imagine. I am awaiting 3.0 before I play anymore in EA even, so we'll see what that ends up offering experience-wise for the masses once it leaves its special access only state. SC will happen eventually, at this point I have enough other games to play that it isn't really bothering me.
I can see this game being a lotta fun for those that want more economy. The UI and graphics are great, the fact that the game has a dynamic economy that every entity relies on is excellent. I plan to invest more time into it soon, so far I have several hours and have had a great time just tooling through the well-done tutorial. It's pretty damn fun even at its current development stage and there's some amazing potential here. If you want something a little more like the X-series, check out Helium Rain.

I'm rolling the Rebel Galaxy soundtrack mod in Starpoint Gemini FTW! You don't really get to build ships piece by piece in either, but both have a semi-4X setup where you can setup trade routes, take over stations, capture ships, run missions, follow a story or make your own, etc. I've been playing a lot of that and Starpoint Gemini Warlords as well, best game LMG have made yet IMHO. Lots to do and see, a lot going on, and a lotta fun. Fleets are a bigger thing now, both on your side and against you. The dev is flushing out more of the economy in recent updates, and making trading a little more challenging. Takes a little getting used to, but is worth it. It is a very unique game and I have really really really enjoyed it. Void Destroyer 2 is a good option if you want Mount & Blade + some RTS/4X + Space Sim in an open world area, the graphics are sorta-Borderlands-ish style but not.
